PORTLAND, Maine — Acting Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck is the city manager’s choice to hold the job on a permanent basis.

City Manager Mark Rees said Tuesday that he’s confident Sauschuck is “the right person for the position.” The City Council will consider the recommendation on Feb. 6.

Sauschuck, who has served as acting chief since then-Chief James Craig left last summer, is a Marine veteran with 15 years in the Portland Police Department.

More than 80 candidates applied for the job, and Rees conducted a five-month national search. Sauschuck says he’s looking forward to creating and expanding programs that “improve the safety and quality of life” of residents in Maine’s largest city.
