ROCKLAND, Maine — Kenneth Grant drove the 64 miles from Ellsworth to Rockland for a haircut. Melinda Steeves of Liberty came to Rockland for a haircut as part of a job change.

And in both cases, the hair lopped from their heads will go to a good cause.

Green with Envy Salon attracted customers from near and far on Saturday, Jan. 30, by offering free haircuts to customers who agreed to donate their hair to Locks of Love.

Grant said he has been looking for a way to donate his long locks for a long time. He had been growing his hair with the intent to donate it to benefit cancer patients who lose their hair. Then last week he saw a television news story about Green with Envy’s offer.

His mother suffered from cancer, although he noted she did not lose her hair. “If someone needs it and I can grow it, why not?” he asked.

Steeves said she said has begun a new job as guidance counselor for Regional School Unit 3 after serving as an educational technician. “I’m starting a new venture in my career. I thought this would be a good time [for the haircut],” Steeves said.

Steeves’ mother also had cancer and Steeves said Locks of Love was a good cause.

Steeves donated 12 inches of hair. Grant donated 14 inches.

Salon owner Marlene Doughty said she decided to make the offer of a free haircut for anyone who donated their locks to the charitable organization as a way to celebrate the opening of her business on Front Street. Green with Envy opened about six weeks ago.

According to its website, Locks of Love is a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada younger than 21 years who suffer from long-term medical hair loss due to any diagnosis. The mission is to help restore the self-esteem and confidence of the recipients.

Doughty said she researched the various organizations to donate hair and she found Locks of Love to be the best and easiest to contact. The salon puts each hair donation into a plastic bag and mails it to Locks of Love.
