ORRINGTON, Maine — Fire crews knocked down a blaze at a Dow Road home late Monday that took the lives of two cats but left the family unhurt, according to Orrington Assistant Fire Chief Scott Stewart.

Firefighters from Orrington, Dedham, Bucksport, Holden, Brewer and Eddington got the call to respond to 527 Dow Road just after 7:15 p.m. when the family returned home to find a section of their house in flames.

“They caught it in the early stages,” Stewart said after returning to the station around 10:30 p.m.

The fire originated in the back section of the house, which Stewart described as an L-shaped mudroom. Stewart said most of the fire damage was limited to that area, but smoke and water damage did spread to the main building. The second floor was relatively unscathed, he said.

“It’s not a 100 percent loss by any stretch,” Stewart said, adding that the family has insurance.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and Fire Marshal Ed Archer will visit the scene Tuesday to try to determine how the fire started, according to Stewart.
