The Downtown Bangor Partnership is looking for a few good vendors — about 45 or so — to participate in the 2012 Bangor Outdoor Market.

The Seventh Annual Bangor Outdoor Market will open on Thursday, June 21 and run until Aug. 30, said Shirar Patterson, a business development officer with the City of Bangor. She is also the staff liaison for the Downtown Bangor Partnership.

The Bangor Outdoor Market features vendors setting up shop on Broad Street and in West Market Square from 5-8 p.m., Thursdays, in conjunction with the Cool Sounds Concerts at Pickering Square; each 90-minute concert starts at 6 p.m. The city closes Broad Street on Thursday afternoons so vendors can set up from 4-5 p.m.

“The idea behind the market and Cool Sounds is to bring people downtown and create some excitement,” Patterson said. The weekly concerts and markets are popular with Bangor-area residents and visitors, with “about 500 people a week” catching both events, she indicated. By late July, “we see a much larger crowd, 700 to 800 people [a night].

“The [Cool Sounds] music is something that you don’t always get at other markets,” Patterson said. She books the bands, with some performing annually and others making an initial appearance. No matter the genre, people bring their lawn chairs or blankets to Pickering Square and relax while listening to Maine musicians.

“We definitely like it to be family-friendly [music],” Patterson said. “We like to mix up the genres, county, pop, rock.” Bands interested in performing during the 2012 Cool Sounds Concerts should contact her at (207) 992-4234, email her at shirar.patterson@bangormaine.gov, or log onto www.downtownbangor.com/, click on the “2012 Outdoor Market Vendor Application” link, and then click on the link above the photo.

The Downtown Bangor Partnership has invited vendors to apply for inclusion in the 2012 outdoor market. “This is an artisans’ market,” Patterson said. “It’s a juried process; vendors must apply and submit photos so we can see what they will offer.

“We focus on Maine-made, high-quality products” that range from furniture and jewelry to photographs, soap, and toys, she said. “We want to keep it to unique items. It’s nice to support local people who are designing products.” Re-sale items are prohibited.

Food vendors can also apply to participate in the outdoor market.

All interested vendors should log onto http://www.downtownbangor.com/, click on the “2012 Outdoor Market Vendor Application” link, and then click on the bold-faced link under “Application Process.” Each vendor must submit an application accompanied by the appropriate non-refundable fee.

According to Patterson, the Bangor Outdoor Market will run through Thursday, Aug. 30, the first time the market has operated an entire summer. Visitors can park in the adjacent municipal parking garage or on the local streets; “there is a lot more on-street parking because the folks who work downtown have left for the day,” she said.

Each concert and market takes place “rain or shine,” Patterson said. “If it’s light rain, we still ask the vendors to set up. We can move the [concert] music under the parking garage, and people will crowd around to listen.

“I think it’s wonderful, seeing so many people having a good time downtown,” she said.
