BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine — Three burglaries at unoccupied residences since the beginning of January are under investigation by the Boothbay Harbor Police Department.

Boothbay Harbor Chief Robert Hasch said Thursday that, although he is not positive the three burglaries were perpetrated by the same person or people, there are similarities. In all three cases there was forced entry into homes where no one was present by suspects who targeted prescription medicine, cash and jewelry.

“These are fitting a mode of operations we’ve seen all year,” said Hasch. “They’re primarily after money. Drugs seem to be at the root of a lot of it.”

Two of the burglaries likely occurred this past weekend and the other was in early January. Two of the homes were summer residences, and the other happened while the occupants were away.

Hasch said his department is working to prevent more burglaries with residents of the town by keeping a list of people who want extra patrols near their homes when they are not there. Hasch said that program has been long-running but that the number of people signing up has increased lately in response to a rash of property crimes. Hasch invited people to become involved in the program or offer any information they have about the crimes by calling 633-5616 during business hours.

Hasch said the probe into the burglaries is ongoing and that some “people of interest” are being investigated.
