WILTON, Maine — Police say one of the victims of an accident on Route 2 in Wilton this week that took two lives was not legally allowed to be behind the wheel and tried to pass another vehicle illegally.

Police told the Sun Journal that 36-year-old Joseph Breton of Jay had his license revoked indefinitely as a habitual offender in 2007 and tried to pass another vehicle in a double-yellow line no-passing zone on Monday afternoon. Roads were slick with snow and ice.

Speed and reckless driving were blamed.

Breton’s car collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by David Miller of Wilton. Miller’s mother, 80-year-old Meta Sevigny of Farmington, was also killed.

Miller and Breton’s passenger were injured. The driver of the vehicle Breton tried to pass was unhurt.
