HOLDEN – Fernand "Fred" Lafontaine, 85, left this world Jan. 24, 2012, after an illness. He was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Woonsocket, R.I., son of the late Gaston and Blandine Lafontaine.

He enlisted into the U.S. Army serving in Germany during and after World War II. He worked for Waterbury Farrel after the service and retired from there in the mid-1980s. He and his wife, Margaret, moved to Holden in 2000. He enjoyed going to their cottage at Phillips Lake during the summer months, enjoying the fishing and quiet setting at the lake.

He is survived by his two daughters, Donna La Madeleine of Northborough, Mass., and Cynthia Bowden of Lewisburg, Pa.; grandchildren, Bonnie Lee La Madeleine and her husband, Jean-Francis Chiener, of Los Angeles, Paul La Madeleine and his wife, Felice "Randi," of Chelmsford, Mass., Amber Knowlton of Framingham, Mass., and Eric Knowlton of Bangor; great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Benjamin of Chelmsford, Mass.; sister, Doris Maroney and her husband, John, of Naugatuck, Conn.; a brother, Roger McNamara and his wife, Julie, of Naugatuck, Conn.; numerous nieces and nephews.
