EASTPORT, Maine — It‘s time to start thinking about Eastport’s third annual Hearts Warming Hearts: Bikini and Speedo Run set for 2 p.m. Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14. The fun run along Eastport’s historic waterfront in the dead of winter with racers clad only in a bikini, Speedo or other swimming attire will raise funds to help keep people warm. Sponsored by Jeff and Lesley Starling, owners of the Happy Crab Restaurant, runners and spectators are treated to hot beverages and pizza at the finish line where the pledges are counted and the tally announced.

The run was envisioned by Jeff Starling and John Miller of Eastport.

“We saw that the elderly didn’t have enough fuel so we thought the run was a way to help,” Starling said. He and Miller are hoping at least 20 runners of all ages will participate.

At least one of the those runners will be Starling.

“I’m always last,” he said. “It’s a fun thing to do, lots of people come out to cheer the runners on.”

The runners make a mad dash from Post Office Square to the Happy Crab Restaurant. In past years, even pets wearing bikinis have participated.

The run has raised about $4,000 each year to benefit the Eastport Fuel Fund which aids the elderly in Eastport and surrounding communities.

Participating in the annual Eastport Bikini and Speedo Run as a runner, team organizer, sponsor or a person who makes a pledge is an opportunity to make a difference at the local level, Miller said.
