PORTLAND, Maine — A state senator from Cape Elizabeth and a Portland home builder say they are running in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.

Sen. Cynthia Dill and Ben Pollard said Friday they will run in the June 12 primary against state Rep. Jon Hinck of Portland and former Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap of Old Town, who previously announced their candidacies.

The 47-year-old Dill told The Portland Press Herald she hopes Maine is ready for what she called a new voice and new generation of leadership in Washington.

The 39-year-old Pollard, who grew up in Blue Hill and owns Pollard Builders, said his campaign will focus on economic development and national security.

The Senate seat is now held by Republican Olympia Snowe, who is facing two challengers in the GOP primary.
