DIXMONT – Robert Earl Smith, 85, passed away peacefully Jan. 18, 2012, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Dixmont, and was born there June 25, 1926, the son of the late Earl Gladwyn Ivan Smith and Eliza (Goodwin) Smith.
Robert graduated from Hampden Academy, class of 1945, and from the University of Maine, with a degree in agriculture. He ran his own dairy farm in Dixmont for most of his life and was dedicated to the town of Dixmont as road commissioner and cemetery sexton for more than 32 years.
Robert is survived by his children, Lois P. Thew, Deborah L. Smith, Phyllis A. Clifford and husband, Paul L. Clifford, all of Dixmont, and Gwendolyn M. LaPointe and husband, Gerald R. LaPointe Sr., of Bangor; a sister, Helen E. Baker of Franklin, Mass.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, M. Arlene (Baker) Smith, in 1967; and by two brothers, Charles F. Smith, in 2011, and Paul E. Smith, in 2005.
At Robert’s request, a graveside service will be held at Dixmont Corner Cemetery, Dixmont, at a date and time to be announced in the spring by Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. In keeping with Robert’s care and concern for the citizens of Dixmont, contributions in his honor may be made to the town of Dixmont, P.O. Box 100, Dixmont, ME 04932-0100.
