SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A Cape Elizabeth woman was charged with operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident after she struck a police cruiser Thursday night.

Officer Rocco Navarro was conducting a traffic stop on Broadway and as he was exiting his cruiser a Jeep Wrangler driven by Elizabeth Hunt, 55, clipped the partially open door, Police Lt. Frank Clark said in a press release.

Hunt’s Jeep subsequently veered to the left away from the vehicle Navarro had stopped and continued eastbound, while the officer alerted other units that the vehicle was on the loose, the release said.

Officer Scott Corbett eventually located the Jeep and Hunt failed roadside sobriety tests, according to the release.

Hunt was arrested and taken to the South Portland police station. She is charged with OUI and leaving the scene of an accident. The incident will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for investigation.
