WINTERPORT – Leroy F. Patterson, 67, passed away Jan. 18, 2012, surrounded by his family at home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 27, 1944, in Bangor, son of Leroy W. and Mary "Dolly" (Francis) Patterson.

Leroy graduated from Bangor High School in 1962, where he excelled in basketball, baseball, tennis and football. He continued his education at the University of Ohio, Cincinnati, where he also had great success athletically, earning him the coveted MVP award his first year. Leroy chose a career at the University of Maine, Orono, as a campus police officer, where he served for 33 years, before retiring as a sergeant in 2010. He enjoyed officiating and attending as many games as he could. He also had a special place in his heart for playing cards as often as he could with his family. Leroy will be most remembered for his warm smile, kindness, athletic abilities, competitive nature, generosity and prominent presence within our community, especially in the sports world.

Surviving are his loving and devoted partner, Cindy Thomas of Winterport; four children, Leroy Patterson Jr. of Lewiston, Ronnie Patterson and his significant other, Mary Tracy, of Bangor, Erica Patterson of Saco and Ryan Weston of Bangor; five grandchildren, Kaija, Jalique, Isaiah, Anjelica and Terrell; sister, Norma Williams of Bangor; brother-in-law, Harry Sherman Bernard of Brooklyn, N.Y.; former brother-in-law, James Williams Sr. of Bangor; nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, James Williams Jr. and his wife, Dawn, of Bangor; several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mabel Steed and her husband, James, and Cathy Bernard.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 5-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A service to celebrate Leroy’s life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Apostolic Lighthouse Church, 517 Hammond St., Bangor, with the Rev. Charles Hurst, pastor, officiating.
