BELMONT, Maine — A man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly head-butting a woman and throwing her keys and purse into the snow.

The woman had a protection from abuse order in place against Christopher Shaffer, 36, of Back Belmont Road, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. “They decided as a couple to violate the [protection from abuse order] to get together and talk,” Trafton said Thursday. “It went downhill.”

Shaffer reportedly threw some of the woman’s belongings into the snow. She later told police that he also head-butted her when she was in her car and called her “vile names,” Trafton said.

The woman reported the assault, and responding police officers arrested Shaffer and charged him with violation of a protection from abuse order, domestic violence assault, terrorizing and criminal mischief.

He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast, where he remained Thursday morning, according to a jail administrator. His bail was set at $2,000 cash.
