Indian Island pair accused of trying to rob friend in Holden

HOLDEN, Maine — Two Indian Island men were arrested early Tuesday morning in connection with a strong-arm robbery that reportedly took place around 12:30 a.m. on U.S. Route 1A.

Arrested on Class B felony robbery charges were Rocky River Fields, 23, and 19-year-old Brandon Couturier, Sgt. Eugene Fizell of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday afternoon.

Both suspects remained at Penobscot County Jail on Tuesday evening, a jail official said. Fields is being held on $5,000 cash bail, while Couturier’s bail was set at $1,500.

Fizell said that the two were riding in a car driven by a 25-year-old friend from Meriden, Conn., who was visiting family in Holden when they allegedly tried to remove money and personal items from their friend’s pockets — while he was driving.

Fizell said that Fields then threw the victim’s car into park, causing it to come to an abrupt stop in the westbound lane of Route IA, and then took the key out of the ignition, leaving the driver no way to move the car out of the roadway.

Fields and Couturier then left on foot and went to the Circle K convenience store about a quarter-mile away and called Fields’ girlfriend for a ride, Fizell said. The alleged victim then called police, who put out an all-points bulletin asking area police agencies to keep an eye out for the suspects.

The suspects were found a short time later on Indian Island, where they were pulled over by Penobscot Indian Nation police and held for questioning, Fizell said. Both were under arrest about two hours after the robbery was reported.

Fields’ girlfriend, whom Fizell said wasn’t aware of what had just taken place, was not charged in connection with the incident.

The alleged victim’s car key, which included a computer chip and would have cost $200 to replace, was found along the side of the road where Rivers threw it, Fizell said.
