Swish-Out, Junior Swish-Out to benefit Maine Children’s Cancer Program

GORHAM, Maine — Maine’s longest-running, continuous three-on-three benefit basketball tournament will take place Sunday, Jan. 29, at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. The 18th annual Dr. Noel Paradise Memorial Swish-Out and Junior Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge is seeking teams to participate in the event. Coordinated by Maine’s credit unions, teams of businesses, friends and family are sought to participate in the event to benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, which treats children and families from Maine and New Hampshire. Teams from both states will participate in the challenge.

The tournament is a three-on-three, co-ed, double-elimination event and is open to adults 18 or older. The entry fee is $100 per team and all funds raised go directly to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Since it began in 1994, more than $200,000 has been raised through the event.

The event also will feature the second annual Junior Swish-Out, open to middle school students in grades six through eight. It is limited to the first 12 teams to enter. Entry fee is $75 per team.

There are two divisions in the Adult Swish-Out Tournament — a 28 team Just For Fun Division and an Elite 8 Division that is invitation-only once a team has registered.

“This event is the longest-running, continuous charity basketball tournament in Maine, and is unique in the fact that 100 percent of all funds raised go directly to the cause,” said Jon Paradise, governmental and public affairs manager for the Maine Credit Union League and the founder of the event.

The event is coordinated by the Maine Credit Union League and Maine’s credit unions and sponsored in part by Five County Credit Union, Wright Express, Wal-Mart, National Semiconductor-Texas Instruments, Hannaford Supermarkets, Martin’s Point Healthcare, CU Promise, Kohl’s, Time Warner Cable and WPOR (101.9) Radio.

Teams in all divisions may be of any size, with the only stipulation being that a members of both sexes are on the court at all times. Participants receive a prize for playing and T-shirts. A silent auction will held in conjunction with the tournament.
