Sixth annual Red Ribbon Ball to raise funds for local HIV and AIDS services

BANGOR, Maine — Eastern Maine AIDS Network, or EMAN, will host its sixth annual Red Ribbon Ball from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 4, at Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road.

The Red Ribbon Ball will feature the music of Brian Catell and Jump Street Jazz Band and a silent auction. A framed autographed photo of the “Glee” cast, prints from artists in the Provincetown, Mass. area, an autographed item from the Celtics, jewelry and a traditional baked bean dinner for eight, an acoustic guitar autographed by Taylor Swift and a drum head signed by the members of Aerosmith are among the items that will be available for bidding. Donations for the silent auction still are being accepted.

The Red Ribbon Ball fundraiser plays a crucial part in the ability to continue to meet the needs of the community that EMAN serves. A goal of $20,000 has been set for the event, with proceeds going to direct client services.

“With the federal and state funds being cut and grants drying up, this fundraiser will help provide free HIV testing, public education and direct services to clients. Many are on disability because of the virus and are on a very limited income, and they need help with heat and food,” Sean Weber, program manager at EMAN.

Currently, HIV case management services are provided to 100 clients, and 400 HIV antibody tests are performed annually.

Weber said, “Despite the ongoing recession, we are anticipating a great turnout for the event. People are digging into their pockets and supporting the event. It shows that they understand that need knows no season.”

Tickets are $25, $40 per couple. For information, tickets or to donate auction items, contact EMAN at 990-3626 or rrb@maineaidsnetwork.com or visit maineaidsnetwork.com.
