Relay for Life to run better with Dunkin’ Donuts penny per cup donation

BREWER, Maine — Five local Dunkin’ Donuts shops have pledged to give to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in a way that has not been seen in this area before. At participating stores, one penny from every cup of coffee sold in 2012 will be donated to the Relay For Life. The stores, located in Eddington, Holden, Orrington and Brewer, expect that by year’s end, the donation could total approximately $10,000.

“Dunkin’ Donuts got involved with the Relay For Life last year and we immediately realized the impact of the event for cancer survivors, caregivers and their families,” said Bruce MacDonald, owner of the five Dunkin’ Donuts stores making the donation. “This year, we wanted to do more, so for every cup of coffee sold in any of our five locations in 2012, we will donate one penny to this amazingly worthwhile cause. Throughout the year, we will see a lot of pennies, and I’m excited to see what the final tally will be for us to give to the American Cancer Society.”

“This money will go a long way for cancer research, support programs and advocacy,” said Mike Hart, community executive for development for the American Cancer Society. “Last year the five Brewer-area Dunkin’ Donuts were great to work with and we look forward to continuing that relationship in 2012. We are impressed, thankful and humbled by their commitment to this cause.”

The 2012 Relay For Life of Penobscot County will take place May 18-19 at the University of Maine track. The 2011 Relay raised more than $197,500 for local programs of cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services, including transportation for cancer patients and one-on-one support for women with breast cancer. The event included 91 teams who walked the track for 18 hours.
