HOUSTON — Gladys Ganiel O’Neill, a Harrington native and 1995 Narraguagus High School graduate, finished 62nd overall and eighth among women finishers Sunday at the Chevron Houston Marathon.

Ganiel, 34, finished in a personal-best time of 2 hours, 40 minutes and 56 seconds for the 26.2-mile distance. That was good for a pace of 6:09 per mile.

Her previous best marathon time was 2:41:22 set at the 2011 London Marathon.

The 1999 Providence College graduate, who now lives in Belfast, Northern Ireland and holds dual U.S.-Irish citizenship, had hoped to finish in under 2:37, which would have met the Olympic “A” standard and made her eligible for the Irish Olympic team.

O’Neill opted to run in Sunday’s race rather than in Saturday’s U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon also held in Houston. Sharlene Flanagan won that race in 2:25:38, with Desiree Davila (2:25:55) and Kara Goucher (2:26:06) also earning berths on the U.S. team for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
