MACHIASPORT, Maine — The Maine Warden Service says a man who became lost in the woods in Washington County was hypothermic, with a body temperature of 83 degrees, when he was found.
Wardens already were searching for Levin Moores in Machiasport when he called 911 after sunset Thursday. He told dispatchers that he was lost and didn’t have shoes or a coat.
Dispatchers used GPS information from Moores’ cell phone to advise the Maine Warden Service of the approximate area where he was located. By the time an ambulance arrived, Moores’ body temperature had fallen to 83 degrees, more than 15 degrees below normal.
Hypothermia sets in when the body temperature drops to 95 degrees. Officials say that in extreme cases victims strip off clothes because the cold causes a burning sensation.
