BATH, Maine — Traffic on Route 1 was interrupted but crisis was averted Thursday morning when a box truck caught fire while traveling on the road.
Bath Fire Chief Steve Hinds said a motorist who noticed smoke pouring from the truck about 8:30 a.m. got the driver’s attention and urged him to pull over. Firefighters arrived to find the burning truck parked at a Cumberland Farms convenience store on the northbound lane of Route 1.
Hinds said crews were able to douse the flames quickly, but the box section of the truck was destroyed. No one was injured and Hinds attributed the fire to an electrical problem.
The truck is owned by I & F Insulation Inc. of Wiscasset.
Route 1 traffic was detoured or reduced to one lane for about 20 minutes.
