FARMINGTON, Maine — A local man was behind bars Wednesday after police suspect he stole a car in Wilton on Monday night, crashed it in Farmington and fled the scene.

Christian Trefethen, 28, faces two charges after an investigation into the theft of the vehicle and the crash, which took place on Route 43, according to Farmington police spokeswoman Bonnie Pomeroy.

Police discovered the 2000 Kia in some trees off Route 43 just after 7 p.m. Monday, but the driver could not be found, Pomeroy said. Residents told police that they noticed a man fleeing the scene shortly after the accident.

Trefethen came to the Farmington police station Tuesday afternoon to turn himself in and was arrested after a brief interview with officers.

He was charged with operating after suspension and leaving the scene of motor vehicle accident, Pomeroy said. Police in Wilton are investigating the theft of the car.

Trefethen was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center, where he remained Wednesday morning.
