Hanscom powers Husson women past Thomas

BANGOR — Bre Hanscom poured in 31 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, blocked six shots, handed out five assists and made five steals to carry the Husson University Eagles to an 84-71 women’s basketball victory over the Thomas College Terriers Tuesday night.

Marissa Albert hit six 3-pointers en route to 22 points and Amanda Gifford contributed 12 points, five assists and three steals for 5-7 Husson.

Karin Bird tossed in 27 points, including six 3-pointers, to pace Thomas College of Waterville (2-10). Ashley Matchett and Elizabeth Goodall provided 11 and 10 points, respectively and Jasmine Bishop had 11 rebounds and five assists.

Saint Joseph’s 67, Lasell 29

At Newton, Mass., the Monks cruised to victory over Lasell behind 17 points and seven rebounds from Megan McDevitt.

Danyelle Shufelt scored 12 points and Lindsay Moore added eight points and eight rebounds for 6-5 Saint Joseph’s of Standish.

Justine Ryan led Lasell (0-11) with 11 points.

UNE 66, Gordon 47

At Biddeford, Kelley Paradis scored 17 points and notched seven steals to lead the University of New England to victory.

Margo Russell contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for 8-3 UNE and Margaret Carlson added nine points.

Leanna Tallamy paced 5-6 Gordon with 13 points.

Rhode Island College 74, USM 50

At Providence, the Anchorwomen jumped out to a 41-26 halftime lead and went on to snap the University of Southern Maine’s six-game winning streak while winning their seventh straight.

RIC held USM to a 31 percent shooting effort from the field (31 percent). Cynthia Gaudent paced the 10-2 Anchorwomen with 18 points.

Haley Jordan led 10-4 USM with 14 points while Courtney Cochran and Nicole Garland each added nine.

MMA-UMF game suspended

At Castine, a power outage with 1:01 remaining in the first half suspended the game between Maine Maritime Academy and UMaine-Farmington. MMA was leading 27-22 when the gym went dark.

The two schools have tentatively set to resume play in Castine on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.

Men’s basketball

UMF 62, MMA 49

At Castine, Ben Johnson recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead UMaine-Farmington by Maine Maritime Academy.

Andrew Dickey chipped in with 15 points for 6-5 UMF and Kevin Leary added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Tyler Pineo paced 2-10 MMA with 16 points, Andy Ball added 12 and Benjamin Russell netted 10. Shawn Dostie suffered an injury in the second half and finished with eight points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.

R.I. College 73, USM 40

At Providence, R.I., Rhode Island College built a 14-point halftime lead, then pulled away to beat the University of Southern Maine.

Mason Choice scored 13 points and Avery King posted 11 for the winners, who shot 49 percent from the floor and scored 31 points off 24 USM turnovers.

John Roberts led the Huskies of Gorham with a game-high 15 points.
