SALISBURY, N.C. — Bangor Daily News assistant sports editor Pete Warner and Bangor sportscaster Rich Kimball offer strong coverage of University of Maine football and several other sports throughout the year and have been recognized for their efforts by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Warner has been named the association’s Maine Sportswriter of the Year for the third straight year and seventh time overall while Kimball has been named Maine Sportscaster of the Year for the fourth time.

Warner, a Bangor native, has worked on the BDN sports staff since 1979 and serves a dual role as a writer and editor. He is responsible for college coverage, including football, basketball and baseball, and writes about a variety of other sports.

A Bangor High School and University of Maine graduate, Warner, 50, coordinates the BDN’s coverage of college sports, assists in editing duties and writes a blog, “Warner’s Corner,” for the BDN website.

Kimball does play-by-play of UMaine football games for the school’s radio network and also hosts a daily drive-time sports talk show on Bangor radio station WAEI (910 AM), “Downtown with Rich Kimball.”

Kimball has won more than two dozen awards for play-by-play of UMaine sports from The Associated Press and the Maine Association of Broadcasters. He began his career at WABI-TV of Bangor while still in high school, moving on to WLBZ-TV of Bangor for seven years, and then to Bangor radio sports station WZON (AM 620).

Kimball teaches social studies at Brewer High School, is the founder of Brewer Youth Theatre, and has acted in nearly three dozen plays for local theater companies.
