Hermon, Houlton capture cheerleading crowns

The Hermon Hawks and Houlton Shiretowners captured league cheerleading titles in separate competitions Saturday as squads prepare for coming Eastern Maine regional meets.

Hermon compiled 139.8 points to win the Big East cheering title in Caribou while Houlton totaled 128.9 points to win the PVC Small School crown at Stearns High in Millinocket. Houlton narrowly edged second-place finisher Central of Corinth, which finished with 128.8 points.

At Caribou, the Ellsworth Eagles recorded 134.4 points to finish second while John Bapst of Bangor totaled 122.3 points to finish third. Rounding out the finishers were Old Town (118), Presque Isle (116.6), Caribou (104.7), Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor (95.8), Washington Academy of East Machias (93.3) and Foxcroft Academy (92.3).

At Millinocket, Orono picked up a third-place finish with 120.3 points while Sumner of East Sullivan finished fourth with 117.8. Rounding out the finishers were Dexter (111.10), Bangor Christian (97.4), Penobscot Valley of Howland (93.5), Lee Academy (89.3), Bucksport (86.5) and Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln (82.6).

The Eastern Maine cheering championships are set for Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Bangor Auditorium.
