Outlook: The Black Bears play the first of two straight home games coming off Monday’s 76-61 win at Binghamton. UMaine hopes to exploit its experience against a UMBC squad that has been thinned by attrition and injury. Dynamic point guard Chris De La Rosa left the team after one game and backup Joey Getz is out with an injury. The Retrievers are coming off Thursday’s 89-72 home loss to Albany. The Bears pit their prolific offense against a UMBC defense that allowed an AE-high 77.7 ppg on nearly 50 percent shooting.

Women’s Basketball

MAINE vs. MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY

Time, site: noon Saturday; Alfond Arena, Orono

Records: Maine 3-11 (0-1 America East), UMBC 7-8 (1-1)

Series, last meeting: Maine leads 9-7, UMBC 56-49 on 2/5/11

Key players: Maine — 5-9 G Ashleigh Roberts (7.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg), 5-7 G Brittany Williams (7.8 ppg, 1.6 apg, .769 FT pct.), 6-3 F Samantha Baranowski (6.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg), 5-6 G Courtney Anderson (6.0 ppg, 2.9 apg), 6-1 F Danielle Walczak (4.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg), 5-10 G/F Rebecca Knight (3.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.3 apg); UMBC — 5-10 F Erin Brown (15.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.7 spg), 5-9 G Michelle Kurowski (11.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.5 spg), 5-7 G Kristin Coles (7.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.0 bpg), 6-3 C Tope Obajolu (7.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg)

Outlook: The Bears return home looking to halt an eight-game losing streak while taking on UMBC, the defending league champion. UMaine, coming off Monday’s 72-54 loss at Binghamton, remains shorthanded. Senior Sam Wheeler and juniors Shareka Maner and Amber Smith are expected to be sidelined with injury or illness. The Retrievers have dropped three of four, including Wednesday’s 51-43 decision at Albany. UMBC, which has proven performers in Brown, Kurowski and Coles, know how to wear down defenses in the half court and push the ball in transition. Both teams have struggled to produce consistent offense. UMaine could improve its chances of winning with a strong rebounding effort as that is not a UMBC strength. The Bears must limit turnovers (21.2 per game) to have a fighting chance.
