CHERRYFIELD, Maine — Treacherous driving conditions created by black ice on Blackwoods Road caused Tony Smith, 46, of Cherryfield to lose control of his Chevy pickup Monday evening, resulting in injuries that required him to be airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Maine State Police Sgt. Tim Tabbutt said Smith was eastbound on Route 182 when his truck spun out of control, left the roadway and struck an embankment near the highway’s intersection with Unionville Road. Tabbutt said neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the single-vehicle accident, which was reported at 5:41 p.m.

Smith was in fair condition Tuesday evening, according to an EMMC spokesperson.
