BANGOR – Ann (Duerr) Hayes, died Jan. 1, 2012, after living 75 years of a rich and wonderful life. Mrs. Hayes was born March 16, 1936, in Portland, and was raised in Augusta, the only child of John Lathrop Duerr and Margaret (Lynch) Duerr.
She was a graduate of Cony High School, Augusta and from the University of Maine, Orono, followed by graduate work at the University of Hartford. Ann was a creative teacher whose career spanned five decades. She taught at Fairmount School, Bangor, before moving to Connecticut. Mrs. Hayes taught kindergarten in Ellington, Conn., for 34 years where she introduced generations of young children to the joy of reading and served as a master teacher to University of Connecticut students. She and her husband, Jay, retired to Maine in 1992 living on Cobbossee Lake, East Winthrop, before moving to Bangor in 1997. Ann met the strong challenge of metastatic breast cancer during her life and faced disease with courage. She especially enjoyed traveling and exploring many fascinating parts of the world with Jay.
Ann is survived by her devoted husband and best friend, Jay. She will be missed by many dear friends. Ann and Jay wish to acknowledge the outstanding care and support provided by the staff of CancerCare of Maine, Karin Giordano, M.D. and David Koffman, M.D.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor. Interment will be held at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Ohio Street, Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments after services at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
