BUCKSPORT, Maine — Bucksport officials will discuss this week a proposed ordinance to ban the use and sale of fireworks in town.

Members of Bucksport’s Ordinance Committee plan to meet Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the town office to discuss the proposal to prohibit the use and sale of “consumer fireworks” that became legal in Maine as of Jan. 1.

The recently enacted state law allows municipalities to impose their own restrictions on fireworks.

The proposed ordinance, which would be subject to a public hearing at the Town Council level, would impose fines of $200 to $600 for use of illegal fireworks while selling fireworks could result in fines of $500 to $1,000.

Simple possession by individuals would not be prohibited within town as long as the fireworks were not used or sold.
