Cochran lifts USM women to holiday tourney title

GORHAM — Courtney Cochran hit two free throws with six seconds remaining in regulation to deliver the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 68-66 women’s basketball win over the nationally-ranked Babson College Beavers in the championship game of the Southern Maine Holiday Invitational Saturday.

The win is the fourth in the row for the Huskies, now 8-3. Babson is 8-2.

Three USM players earned spots on the all-tournament team. Cochran and Nicole Garland joined the tournament’s Most Valuable Player Haley Jordan.

Cochran finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. She was 8-for-10 from the free throw line and 5-for-10 from the field Garland was 4-for-5 from 3-point territory and 6-for-9 overall en route to 18 points. She added three assists. Jordan had 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot.

Babson’s Sarah Collins led all scorers with 27 points on a 13-for-21 effort from the field. She recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds, another game high total, and added two assists, two blocks and two steals.

Cal-Lutheran 56, Bowdoin 55

At Thousand Oaks, Calif., Cal-Lutheran used a late 6-0 run to hold off a Bowdoin rally in the finale of the Posada Royale Holiday Classic Saturday.

Erica Whitley scored 13 points to lead 6-4 Cal-Lutheran.

Bowdoin had its four-game win streak snapped and slipped to 7-3. Kaitlin Donahoe scored 18 points to lead the Polar Bears and Alexa Barry contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds. Both players were named to the all-tourney team.

Jill Henrikson chipped in with nine points and four steals for Bowdoin and Amy Hackett added seven points and two assists.

Brandeis 77, Husson 45

At Waltham, Mass., Saturday, rookie guard Hannah Cain scored 11 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists to lead Brandeis by Husson.

Morgan Kendrew added 13 points for 7-4 Brandeis.

Brianna Hanscom paced 3-5 Husson with 16 points and nine rebounds. Vanessa Sanderson added eight points.

Men’s Basketball

WPI 68, St. Joseph’s 58

At Worcester, Mass., David Brown hit 5 of 7 3-pointers en route to a career-high 18 points in the win over St. Joseph’s.

Chris Petzy paced 6-2 St. Joseph’s with 19 points, Zach O’Brien added 16 and Tom Ray put in 10. Clark Noonan grabbed eight rebounds.

WPI is now 9-2.

Hunter 84, UNE 57

At Springfield, Mass., Sunday, Panagiotis Koutsoloukas scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Hunter (4-6) by the University of New England in the consolation game of the Hampton Inn West/Springfield Naismith Classic.

Marcus Winn paced 0-8 UNE with 17 points and Chrles Fenner added 12.
