New Year’s Eve events around the state

BANGOR — Downtown Countdown 2012, 5 p.m.-midnight, featuring 12 venues and more than 20 activities and entertainment options.

5-7 p.m.: Maine Discovery Museum, hat and noisemaker creation followed by the early countdown parade, specifically for children who are not able to stay up until midnight.

6-10 p.m.: Bangor Public Library New Year’s Eve Party featuring magician Danny Baker (6:15 p.m.), planetarium shows (on the half hour), board games, video games, karaoke, dancing with The Robinson Ballet and pop-funk music by The Sky Scrapers. Early evening costume contest for those under 14 and a Steampunk costume contest from 8 to 10 p.m. Costume not required for attendance.

6-11 p.m.: Hammond Street Senior Center, Step In Time Cloggers and games, all ages welcome.

7-9 p.m.: University of Maine Museum of Art, “All Decked Out,” make your own crown or tiara.

7-8 p.m.: Downtown Countdown Kick-Off, West Market Square, with MC Mike Elliot from Kiss 94.5 Mike & Mike in the Morning.

8-11:30 p.m.: Horse Drawn Wagon Rides, Pickering Square.

8-10:45 p.m.: Street Dance, West Market Square, with music by High Tech Entertainment, performances by AO Parts, House of Paradigm, Casual Arcane and fine art by Eleni Margaronis.

8-9 p.m.: Douglas A. Beck, St. John’s Episcopal Church, audience singalong and New Year’s Eve pipe organ “fireworks.” Followed by a celebratory reception until 10 p.m.

8:15-8:55 p.m. and 9:45-10:25 p.m.: Maximum Blue, Bangor Opera House.

8-11:30 p.m.: Preservation Blues Band, Bagel Central.

8-11:30 p.m.: Retro Rockerz, Union Street Brick Church.

8-10 p.m.: Chair Massages by Anthony John’s, Mass Mutual, 21 Main St.

8:30-9:30 p.m.: Story Slam, Mass Mutual.

9-9:40 p.m. and 10:30-11 p.m.: Comedian Erik Gundersen, Bangor Opera House.

9:20-10 p.m.: Ray Costlow, City Hall Council Chambers.

9:30-10:30 p.m.: Velma, Mass Mutual.

10:45-11:45 p.m.: The Blast Addicts, outdoor stage in West Market Square.

11:45-Midnight: Countdown at West Market Square with MC Erik Gundersen and ball drop.

BANGOR — New Year’s Eve celebration, 7:30 p.m., Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road. All-inclusive tickets $125 a couple, which includes a dinner buffet 7:30-8:30 p.m., hors d’oeuvres 8:30-10:30 p.m., open bar and champagne toast at midnight. BAR HARBOR — First Night celebration, 5-7 p.m., downtown, featuring bonfire and hayrides.

BELFAST — 15th annual New Year’s By the Bay, featuring cultural, family-oriented, chemical-free celebration, $18 for adults, $5 for students and children, featuring events at 12 venues across town. Full schedule of activities and performances at nybb.org.

BLUE HILL — Last Night Celebration, 6:30 p.m. to midnight, multiple venues throughout the town featuring music, dance, theater, poets and children’s activities. Details and updated performance schedule available at flashinthepans.org.

EASTPORT — Seventh annual Great Sardine and Maple Leaf Drop from the Tides Institute and Museum of Art, Bank Square, 43 Water St. A number of downtown dining establishments are offering food and entertainment specials. Several downtown businesses will be open throughout the day with some businesses open until midnight and beyond. In addition, the Peavey Library will host a “Kid-Night Feast,” at noon as part of the “Eat Local at Your Local Library” series. Sample local foods and decorate a smaller scale sardine or maple leaf. To commemorate the New Year, the “giant sardine” will be lowered at midnight (Eastern time) with the “maple leaf” lowered an hour earlier (11 p.m. Eastern, or midnight Atlantic time).
