Horse, 2 cats killed in Farmington fire

FARMINGTON, Maine — The state fire marshal’s office is investigating a fire in western Maine that destroyed a large barn and stable, killing a horse and two cats.

When firefighters arrived at the Knowlton Corner Farm in Farmington at about 4 a.m. Thursday, the barn and stable were engulfed in flames.

Jim Pierce, the new nephew of owners Robert Govoni and Arlene Messelli, told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that a dozen or so horses were outside when the fire started and were unharmed. He said the couple board and train horses using a training ring inside the barn, which was built in the 1860s.

Pierce said the fire also destroyed a trailer, two jeeps, a horse trailer, a dump truck, a boat and two snowmobiles.
