New chief nursing officer chosen for Down East Community


Rob Janssen, RN, BSN, CEN has assumed the position of chief nursing officer at Down East Community Hospital in Machias. Janssen joined DECH in 2010 as a nursing supervisor, and was promoted to nurse manager of the Emergency Department and Cardiac Rehabilitation shortly after arrival. He later became interim chief nursing officer in June 2011 when Karen Labonte left the position. Janssen is a 1990 nursing graduate of Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario. He has worked in hospitals in Ontario and North Carolina. He obtained his BSN from East Carolina University and then his Certification in Emergency Nursing. Janssen’s wife Pam also is a nurse at DECH.

Jay Fortier of Orono has been promoted from business services officer to assistant vice president of member business services at University Credit Union. Fortier joined UCU in July 2009 with more than 20 years of experience in financial services. In his tenure at UCU, he has proven himself to be a valuable asset to both the Credit Union and UCU’s Business Members, offering a friendly and professional partner to assist business members with all of their financial needs. Fortier resides in Orono with his family and is active in community and statewide organizations.

Joseph M. Murphy, president and CEO of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, along with the Board of Directors, announced the following recent promotions: Lottie Stevens has been promoted from operations manager to assistant vice president of operations and is processing daily work, developing departmental efficiencies, and working on special projects as assigned by management. She first joined the bank in 1985. Stevens is originally from Bethel, attended the University of Southern Maine and is a graduate of Williams College School of Banking. She lives in Bar Harbor with her husband, Bruce.

Jackie Curtis has been promoted from human resources manager to assistant vice president of human resources, and is responsible for the bank’s recruitment efforts, performance management, safety program and implementing new departmental projects, such as the bank’s participation in the 2011 Best Places to Work program. Relocating from Portland to be closer to family, Curtis joined Bar Harbor Bank & Trust in 2010. She was employed by TD Bank for 19 years, in various positions and most recently for a period of 10 years as manager of the corporate workers compensation, safety, leave, and disability programs. Curtis is originally from Penobscot and is a graduate of George Stevens Academy and University of Southern Maine. She enjoys hiking with her dogs, and spending quality time with family, and volunteers with Relay For Life. She lives in Blue Hill with her husband, Rob.

Greg Jones has been promoted from customer service manager of the Rockland office to branch relationship manager and is responsible for the daily management of the Rockland branch, ensuring smooth operations and providing assistance to customers and employees as needed. He provides assistance with consumer loans, opening new accounts, and general customer service. Jones joined the bank in 2006 and has held various positions. Jones graduated from Georges Valley High School, Thomas College and the Northern New England School of Banking. He enjoys playing golf, spending time with his wife and daughter, and renovating their historic sea captain home in Rockland.

Steven Blackett has been promoted from assistant vice president of credit administration to vice president of credit administration and is responsible for managing the bank’s commercial loan underwriting function, supervising a staff of two, and coordinating workflow with other departments. Blackett joined the bank in 2000 and worked as a commercial lender in the managed assets department, and has been underwriting primarily commercial credit applications for the last eight years. After earning his undergraduate degree at St. Anselm’s College, Blackett’s first job was working with handicapped individuals for three years after which he served a six-year stint with the U.S. Coast Guard, including three years stationed in Southwest Harbor. For the next five years, while earning his MBA at the University of Maine in Orono, Blackett worked as a stern man, scallop diver and boat captain. After finishing his degree, he joined the bank. A resident of Bar Harbor, Blackett regularly volunteers at the Bar Harbor Food Pantry and enjoys spending leisure time with his wife and daughters.

Karri Bailey has been promoted from vice president of credit administration portfolio manager to vice president of managed assets, expanding her role to include supervision of the managed assets department along with servicing a portfolio of commercial credit accounts. Bailey re-joined the bank in 2010 working in the credit administration area. She has more than 20 years of banking experience, including other banks in Maine and Kansas. In 2001, Bailey returned to Maine and worked for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust for a few years then at First Citizen. She lives in Lamoine and volunteers with the SPCA as a foster mom caring for expectant felines and then raising the kittens until they are ready for adoption.

U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe recently announced veteran Maine staff member Don Green has returned to Washington, D.C., to serve as Snowe’s legislative director. Green had worked previously for Sen. Snowe and for Sen. Susan Collins. Chris Averill, a five-year veteran of the Senate Small Business Committee, on which Snowe serves as ranking member, will replace Communications Director Ken Lundberg who has worked on Capitol Hill as a journalist and communications adviser to House and Senate members since 1995 and left to pursue interests in the private sector. Averill has worked on the Senate Small Business Committee since February 2007, handling a number of legislative issues of interest to Maine for Sen. Snowe, including manufacturing and the economic redevelopment of closed military bases, such as the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. Additionally, Averill handled communications for the Republican staff of the Committee. Averill is a 2006 graduate of Bowdoin College. Brandon Bouchard was promoted from Snowe’s deputy press secretary to press secretary, and Scott Ogden of the Senator’s staff was named deputy press secretary. Bouchard and Ogden are both native Mainers and graduates of Bowdoin College.

Spectrum Generations in Damariscotta recently welcomed Rachel McAllian to its Bridges Help at Home program as a personal services supervisor in the Southern Kennebec area. McAllian has a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management from Husson University and previously worked at the MaineCare Pharmacy Help Desk. She has volunteered for the Red Cross and was involved with organizing relief packages going to Haiti. The addition of McAllian allows Jennifer Boynton and Linda Slater, personal services supervisors, to focus on the coastal region, and Somerset and Northern Kennebec counties, respectively.

Amanda Simonds recently was promoted from personal services specialist for Spectrum Generations Bridges Help at Home Division to adult daybreak activities aide. She was hired in August 2011 and has a BA in social work, with experience as an education technician, customer service representative, behavioral specialist and CNA. She will spread her time between Spectrum Generations Cohen Center in Hallowell and Muskie Center in Waterville.
