‘The Nite Show’ to give viewers local New Year’s Eve countdown option

BANGOR, Maine — “The Nite Show with Danny Cashman” is set to ring in 2012 with a local New Year’s Eve special.

“The Nite Show New Year’s Spectacular” will feature clips and highlights from the show’s first 15 months on the air, surprises, music from the band Spilled Milk, and the all-important countdown to 2012.

“New Year’s Eve is a special night for so many reasons,” said Dan Cashman, host of “The Nite Show.”

“While many people enjoy counting down to midnight and celebrating the year that was and the year ahead, not everyone likes to leave their homes to do that. So we’re producing a local new year’s show that will take viewers into 2012 with what have become benchmarks of our show: surprises, guests, music, laughs, and — most of all — many, many, many batches of awkward silence.”

“The Nite Show New Year’s Spectacular” will air opposite other New Year’s broadcasts, including those hosted by Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest, Anderson Cooper and Carson Daly, to name a few. Cashman says the difference between “The Nite Show’s” broadcast and the others is the same that he feels separates his show with other late night talk shows: localism.

“You might tune in New Year’s Eve, or any Saturday night, and catch your neighbor doing stand-up comedy, or a friend of yours you know from work in a comedy skit we’re doing,” said Cashman. “Maine is full of talented people who love to be creative, and our show provides an outlet for that. We’ve been fortunate that viewers have latched on to the premise.”

On the air since October 2010, “The Nite Show” has featured a variety of interviews, magicians, comedians, bands and singers from Millinocket to York. In addition to guests, the show contains all of the other elements of traditional, national late night talk shows, including a house band, an announcer, a stand-up opening monologue, a comedy bit and a live studio audience.

“The Nite Show with Danny Cashman” is normally seen at 11:30 p.m. Saturdays on WABI-TV 5 in Bangor, and at 10 p.m. Saturdays on WPXT-TV 51, The CW, in Portland, although the one-hour New Year’s Eve special will be seen in both markets starting at 11:30 p.m.

“The Nite Show with Danny Cashman” is taped in front of a live studio audience at the Next Generation Theatre in Brewer and is produced by students and faculty from the New England School of Communications in Bangor. Tickets for future shows are available by emailing tickets@theniteshowmaine.com. The show’s next available taping is Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012.
