PALERMO, Maine — Two brothers and a father and son were killed Christmas Day in an automobile accident that ranks as the deadliest in Maine in 2011.
Tyler Manduca, 18, and his 21-year-old brother Kyle Manduca, both of Bucksport, as well as 64-year-old Dennis Sturges and his father, Roy Lucier, 83, both of Palermo, were all killed in the accident. The two vehicles were headed to separate Christmas events with other family members when the crash took place.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Sunday evening that a sport utility vehicle driven by Tyler Manduca lost control at about 1:30 p.m. on Route 3 in Palermo. It skidded sideways into the path of a car driven by Sturges, which hit the SUV broadside.
“All four were killed instantly,” said McCausland.
Light snow was falling at the time and Manduca was driving too fast for the road conditions, according to a press release from McCausland. Alcohol consumption is not considered to be a factor in the crash.
Route 3 was blocked for most of the afternoon while rescue workers from Palermo, Montville, Liberty and China cleaned up the scene. Periods of snow in the area were slowing down that process, said McCausland.
Palermo is located northeast of Augusta in Waldo County.
