NBC show to feature St. Paul’s Penumbra Theatre

ST. PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul’s Penumbra Theatre will get some national television exposure Monday.

NBC-TV’s “Rock Center with Brian Williams” is scheduled to air a profile on Penumbra Theatre and founder and artistic director Lou Bellamy.

The show is scheduled to air at 10 p.m.

Penumbra staged its original play, “I Wish You Love,” about singer Nat King Cole, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. last June. NBC was the network that aired Cole’s show in the 1950s. That connection led to the feature about the award-winning black theater and its founder.

Bellamy founded Penumbra in 1976. The late playwright August Wilson, a two-time Pulitzer winner, had his first professionally produced play at the Penumbra in 1981.
