GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Rachelle Coward scored a game-high 30 points to power Charleston Southern University to a 78-63 women’s basketball victory over Maine in the consolation game of the Gator Holiday Classic on Wednesday.
In a game marked by scoring runs by both teams, the Buccaneers (7-4) eventually took a 20-point lead in the second half. The Black Bears (3-9) were able to cut the margin to 62-48 with 7:48 to play, but the teams traded points from then on.
The Bears jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the first 3:37 of the game, but the Buccaneers went on a 13-2 run to go up by eight (17-9) with 13 minutes to go in the first half.
Maine cut that lead to 17-13, but that was as close as the Black Bears would get the rest of the game.
Charleston Southern went on a 7-1 run, Maine cut the lead back to five at 24-19, but a 14-6 run by the Buccaneers put Charleston Southern up by 13 at halftime, 38-25.
Guard Shareka Maner led the Black Bears with a career-high 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Guard Rebecca Knight of Alfred was named to the all-tourney team after her five-point, eight-rebound performance Wednesday. She also had three assists and three steals.
Ashleigh Roberts added 10 points in 12 minutes of play for Maine, Brittany Williams finished with eight points and forward Samantha Baranowski had seven points.
Maine out-rebounded the Bucs 48-36, but CSU countered with more assists (12-8), more steals (8-7) and fewer turnovers (23-19).
Coward’s performance was marked by six 3-pointers, and the Buccaneers were 10 for 27 for the game on threes.
Erin Bratcher posted 13 points for CSU, and Shay Jones had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Maine next plays Siena at Alfond Arena at 6 p.m. Dec. 29.
