Having trouble fitting into your favorite knee-high boots this winter? Marie Claire magazine has some tips for toning and slimming your calves:
Avoid sodium-heavy snacks. Sodium causes bloat. “Foods don’t have to be salty to contain sodium,” said Bethany Thayer, R.D., of Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Watch out also for bread and condiments.
Walk. Sitting causes the circulation in the lower half of your body to slow. Walk around to avoid swelling, Marie Claire says.
Tone. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, turn your feet out like a ballet dancer, so your hips, thighs, knees and toes turn outward. Bend your knees, further rotating from hips; pull in abs and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Rise back up, squeezing the inner thighs while you come up. Repeat 20 times daily.
Stretch. Bend your left knee and step your right leg behind you, toes forward. Push the right heel down and hold for 30 seconds. Do three reps daily per side to “lengthen muscles so calves don’ bulk up,” said Lisa Wheeler, cocreator of the Barre Burn class for Equinox Fitness.
