CARRABASSET VALLEY, Maine — Two-time Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott is partnering with L.L. Bean in the new year.
Wescott will serve as brand ambassador and assist product developers and product testing. He’ll also make appearances on behalf of L.L. Bean as the company celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012.
The Farmington native is a spokesman for Maine’s “Take it Outside” and “WinterKids” programs that support healthy and active lifestyles.
“I grew up in Maine and with L.L.Bean,” said Wescott in a release. “As a Mainer, I’m proud to be associated with a Maine brand that has always been associated with quality, outdoor recreation and healthy active living.”
Wescott won his first gold medal gold in the inaugural snowboardcross in the Turin Olympics, then collected gold again Vancouver. He recently returned from a back-country adventure in Antarctica where he explored challenging terrain while product testing L.L.Bean outerwear.
Bean spokeswoman Carolyn Beem told the Bangor Daily News that Wescott would be the first celebrity “brand ambassador” the company has worked with.
“He is a celebrity, but because of his level of experience, he brings a lot to our table,” said Beem. “It’s not just using him because he’s got a name – it’s because he’s interested in having conversations with us. A big piece of it for us is providing some input into our product development.”
Beam said working with Wescott introduces the Bean brand to a “different group of product users,” which would include snowboarders and extreme sports enthusiasts.
“It makes a lot of sense for us – he’s a Maine boy, he’s a Bean customer,” she said.
He also serves as an ambassador for the “Level Field Fund,” a grant-giving program that bridges gaps in funding for uniquely talented athletes in need of financial assistance, and has headed up efforts to establish Level Field Fund – Maine. Wescott’s sponsors include Bern, Bolle, L.L.Bean, Norway Savings Bank, Points North Heli, Sprint, Sugarloaf, and VISA.
