OLD TOWN, Maine — A wanted local man was caught Monday afternoon when a neighbor reported she returned home and saw him leaving her apartment, Old Town police Capt. Kyle Smart said Tuesday.

Joseph Lessard, 39, who was wanted for failing to show up for court, was captured after the 21-year-old woman called police around 3:25 p.m., the police captain said.

She had a hide-a-key that Lessard apparently found to gain access to the Jameson Street apartment, he said.

The victim said nothing from her apartment was missing, but she thought he had been rummaging in her refrigerator, according to said. “She didn’t want charges filed.”

When police found Lessard, “he appeared to be under the influence of drugs,” the police captain said.

Lessard was arrested on the outstanding warrant and taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor. He remained in jail Tuesday evening, a jail official said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
