OLD TOWN, Maine — A local man who got upset when he returned home Monday evening and found the wood stove was not properly closed assaulted a relative and was arrested, Old Town police Capt. Kyle Smart said Tuesday.

Walter Leavitt, 57, was charged with assault and criminal mischief at around 5 p.m. Monday after investigating officers found the 23-year-old male victim on the floor with red swelling and a cut on his face, the police captain said.

The victim’s glasses also were broken along with a computer, Smart said. The criminal mischief charge was for the broken items, the police captain explained.

“Walter denied any assault had taken place,” Smart said.

Leavitt, who lives on the West Old Town Road, was arrested and taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and later released, he said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
