Spencer Cooke of Cheverus, a Fitzpatrick Trophy candidate, runs in the fourth quarter during the Class A state championship football game Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Spencer Cooke of Cheverus of Portland, Jordan Hersom of Leavitt of Turner Center and Louis DiTomasso of Wells have been selected as the three finalists for this year’s James. J. Fitzpatrick Trophy, presented to the state’s best high school senior football player.

Cooke, a running back and defensive back, helped Cheverus win its second straight Class A state title, while DiTomasso, a fullback and linebacker, led Wells to the Class B state crown and already has been named the state’s Gatorade player of the year.

Hersom, a quarterback and defensive back, led Leavitt to its third straight Eastern B championship.

That trio was selected from a field of 12 semifinalists announced late last month.

The Fitzpatrick Trophy winner will be announced during a Jan. 15, 2012, banquet in Portland.
