Allegiant Air inaugurates non-stop Bangor-to-Fort Lauderdale flights

By Brian Swartz, Of The Weekly Staff

BANGOR — Florida-bound Mainers gained a major travel advantage on Thursday, Nov. 17 as Allegiant Air inaugurated direct, non-stop jet service between Bangor International Airport and Fort Lauderdale.

Speaking shortly before Allegiant Flight 941 landed from Fort Lauderdale, BIA Director Rebecca Hupp indicated that BIA officials had worked with Allegiant “two to three years to develop this route.” Allegiant already flies similar non-stop flights from Bangor to Orlando/Sanford Airport and Tampa/St. Petersburg Airport; to Hupp, adding Fort Lauderdale made sense.

“Florida is one of our top destinations,” she explained. “Fort Lauderdale is always in our top 10 destinations. There is always a market for Fort Lauderdale; it is a popular cruise embarkation point” and destination for snowbirds.

Inbound from Fort Lauderdale, Allegiant Flight 941 landed at approximately 11:20 a.m. and taxied to a jet ramp. Passengers quickly disembarked through a secure area where outbound passengers awaited the opportunity to fly south on a cold November day.

Flying MD-80s, Allegiant will offer two weekly Bangor-to-Fort Lauderdale flights. A third flight could possibly be added if passenger traffic increases.

According to Hupp, “Allegiant accounts for a little bit less than 20 percent of our total customers.” She thinks the Fort Lauderdale flights will boost passenger counts at BIA, which is also serviced by Delta and US Airways.
