WATERVILLE, Maine — A Winslow man picked the wrong person to attempt to fight Tuesday — he was arrested for challenging an off-duty police officer, according to police.

Winslow police Officer Haley Fleming was at the Walmart Supercenter in Waterville with his wife and young child just after noon Tuesday when Kyle Grimes, 23, approached him, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.

“He took an aggressive stance with him, and certainly the officer was concerned for what this guy was going to do,” Rumsey said.

Grimes’ posture and body language posed a threat to the officer, Rumsey said. The deputy chief said he believes the suspect wanted revenge for past crimes he was charged with in Winslow.

“We’re concerned about anybody who would approach and fight somebody, let alone a police officer who is off-duty with his family,” Rumsey said.

Rumsey said it was unknown whether Fleming had his gun with him while off-duty.

Grimes was charged with criminal threatening. He was released on bail from the Waterville police station on Tuesday, and his bail conditions prohibit him from having any contact with Fleming or possessing weapons. Grimes is due in court April 3.
