MARS HILL, Maine — A former teacher at Central Aroostook High School who was charged with unlawful sexual touching of a student last fall is out of jail after serving a five day sentence for the crime.

According to records provided by Aroostook County Superior Court in Caribou, Alan J. Brown, 55, was found guilty in October and sentenced to five days in jail and a $500 fine.

The conviction for the misdemeanor charge will not require him to register as a sex offender.

Brown also spent 48 hours in jail and paid a $250 fine this past August for violating condition of release. He was charged approximately four months after his initial arrest after he tried to contact the victim of his crime.

Brown, who was a geography, civics, psychology and U.S. history teacher at CAHS, was charged by Maine State Police with unlawful sexual touching last September. He is no longer a teacher at the school.

Brown was released on bail shortly after his initial arrest. He was arraigned on the unlawful sexual touching charge last December and pleaded not guilty. His bail conditions required him to refrain from contacting the victim, who is under 18 and not identified, or the victim’s family.

A short time later, State Police Detective Sgt. John Cote said that police received information that Brown had tried to contact the victim. An investigation led to Brown’s arrest this past January on a charge of violation of conditions of release.

Aroostook County District Attorney Todd Collins said Thursday that the victim was a student and the incident occurred on or about Sept. 7, 2010. He provided no other details. Brown was charged on Sept. 24 or 25. He could have faced up to 364 days incarceration and a $2,000 fine.

CORRECTION:

The headline on an early version of this story requires correction. Brown’s charge would not require registering as a sex offender.
