Bucksport man accused of sexually abusing girl under 14

By Kevin Miller, BDN Staff

BUCKSPORT, Maine — A local man has been charged with repeatedly sexually abusing a young girl over a three-year period.

Steve M. Kane, 48, has been charged with three counts of Class B unlawful sexual contact, three counts of Class C unlawful sexual contact, three counts of Class A gross sexual assault, one count of Class C sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of Class D sexual abuse of a minor.

According to court documents, the alleged abuses — all against the same young girl — happened during 12 separate incidents in Bucksport between April 2008 and March 2011. The girl was under age 14 during most of the incidents, according to the charging documents.

It was unclear Thursday how Kane knew the alleged victim.

Kane was indicted by the Hancock County grand jury last week and subsequently was arrested by the Bucksport Police Department. He was released from Hancock County’s jail on a $50,000 surety bond and is prohibited from having any contact with people named in the cases as well as any children under age 16. He also is prohibited from using alcohol and drugs and could be subjected to random tests.

The most serious charges against Kane are Class A felonies punishable by up to 40 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
