Calais college workshop to satisfy new food safety certification law

CALAIS, Maine — A new law that will go into effect in January 2012 will require food certification for all commercial eating establishments.

The Washington County Community College in cooperation with the Sunrise County Economic Council is sponsoring a two-day ServSafe workshop from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 5-6.
Participants must register by Dec. 28, with payment due upon registration.

The cost is $145 per person for the two-day workshop, which includes textbooks and 16 hours of training. If two people from the same business attend, they can share a textbook and the price drops to $47.50, for the second person.

“The workshop is important because every licensed food provider in the state of Maine will be required [as of Jan. 18, 2012] to have someone on staff who is certified in the ServSafe Program,” said Scott Harriman, WCCC associate dean of community education and students affairs.

He said in a prepared statement that the new law applies to establishments such as restaurants, cafeterias and other places where food is provided.

Harriman said that Sunrise County Economic Council is offering a $50 scholarship to the first 20 people who register.

The course will be taught by WCCC culinary arts instructor Weibley Dean.

The training is part of the Maine Woods Training Initiative, a project supported by the Maine Woods Consortium with funding from the Betterment Fund and USDA Rural Development.
