SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A Canaan woman is dead and another man is in the hospital after a head-on collision on U.S. Route 2 in Skowhegan Thursday morning.
Skowhegan Police Chief Michael Emmons said John Patterson, 66, of Skowhegan was traveling eastbound when his sport utility vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a westbound sedan driven by Dawn Poplawski, 59, of Canaan.
Both drivers were transported to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan, where Poplawski later died of her injuries, Emmons said.
Patterson complained of injuries to his right leg, but he was not seriously hurt, according to Emmons.
Maine State Police were on the scene reconstructing the accident, Emmons said, noting that neither speed nor alcohol were factors.
The accident took place just east of Parkman Hill Road, east of downtown Skowhegan, and Route 2 was shut down while crews reconstructed the crash.
The Somerset County district attorney’s office is investigating the accident, Emmons said, and he expects the investigation to take quite some time.
