UMPI women beat Pine Manor for first victory

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The University of Maine-Presque Isle took a 33-30 lead with 12:18 left in the second half and never trailed the rest of the way en route to a 57-48 women’s basketball victory over Pine Manor Saturday.

Emily Pelletier paced 1-5 UMPI with 14 points while Rashell Saucier chipped in with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Olivia McNally added 12 points and Emily Moore had nine points and eight assists.

Therline Dumeran paced 3-3 Pine Manor with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

MCLA 83, UMFK 56

At Northfield, Vt., Saturday, Alie Dobrovoic scored 23 points to lead the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts by UMaine-Fort Kent in the Hockenberry Classic consolation game.

Taylor Boucher led 1-5 UMFK with 14 points and Megan Land added 11. Jennifer Colpitts chipped in with 12 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. She was named to the all-tourney team.

ECSU 75, USM 57

At Willimantic, Conn., Saturday, Lauren Kelleher scoed 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead 3-2 Eastern Connecticut State University by the University of Southern Maine.

Haley Jordan paced 4-3 USM with 22 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Courtney Cochran chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Bates 74, Norwich 62

At Northfield, Vt., Saturday, Kelsey Flaherty earned tourney MVP honors as she scored 17 points and recorded 10 assists to lead Bates by Norwich in the Hockenbury Classic championship game.

Taryn O’Connell chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds for 4-1 Bates and Aliah Curry led the 2-5 Cadets with 15 points.

EMCC splits weekend

At Concord, N.H., Eastern Maine Community College beat Nashua CC 86-26 on Saturday, but dropped a 66-54 decision to NHTI on Sunday during the NHTI/Nashua Festival Tourney.

Emma Johnson paced 4-5 EMCC on Saturday with 15 points. Rebecca Redding and Victoria Davenport each added 13 points, Ashley Thayer put in 12, Caroline Weymouth netted 11 and Dani Ross had 10. Ross led EMCC on Sunday with 12 points.

Colby 56, Bowdoin 41

At Waterville, Saturday, Jil Vaughan scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help Colby improve to 5-0.

Aarika Ritchie chipped in with 12 points for Colby while Diane Manduca added eight points and seven assists.

Kaitlin Donahoe paced 3-2 Bowdoin with 12 points.

UNE 68, Salve Regina 56

At Biddeford, Kelley Paradis scored 15 of her season-high points during a 28-16 stretch to close the game to give the University of New England the victory.

Beth Suggs added 14 points and nine rebounds for 4-1 UNE and Margo Russell netted 10 points.

Husson 74, MMA 53

At Bangor, Stephanie Comstock scored 16 points to help Husson earn its first victory.

Kelli Murray, Marissa Albert and Brianna Hanscom each added 15 points for the 1-3 Eagles. Hanscom also had nine rebounds.

Maggie Smith paced 2-3 Maine Maritime Academy with 14 points and Sam Goda recorded 13 points and nine rebounds.

UMF 67, Green Mountain 42

At Farmington, Saturday, the UMaine-Farmington Beavers jumped out to an 18-1 lead en route to the victory.

Kenni Norton paced 2-5 UMF with 17 points while Rachel Clement, Kelsey Graffam and Lindsay Ranquist each added eight. Ranquist also had five steals and Paige Saunders had 11 rebounds.

Men’s basketball

Unity 54, NMCC 53

At Unity, Sunday, Zach Babin hit one of two free throws with .6 seconds left to secure the victory for Unity.

John Crowe paced 2-4 Unity with 22 points and Babin added 17.

Sam Joy scored 27 points to lead 0-3 Northern Maine Community College and Matt Till put in 16.

Bowdoin 96, UMPI 66

At Brunswick, Saturday, Ryan O’Connell scored 20 points and Bowdoin shot 61 percent from the field to beat UMaine-Presque Isle and improve to 4-2. Will Hanley chipped in with his fifth straight double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

Patrick Manifold paced 2-3 UMPI with 21 points hwile Kyle Corrigan recorded 11 points and four assists. Gerardo Vasquez added 10 points.

UMFK 67, Fisher 60

At Waterville, Saturday, Jeremy Thomas hit 8 of 12 shots from the field and finished with a game-high 25 points to lead UMaine-Fort Kent by Fisher in the Colby Invitational.

Yoshives Belizaire added 10 points for 5-5 UMFK anbd Othniel Hyliger had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Dennis Norfold led 2-8 Fisher with 19 points.

Husson 77, MMA 64

At Newman Gym in Bangor Saturday, Husson used a balanced scoring attack and outrebounded Maine Maritime Academy 33-21 to record the victory.

Marc Zaharchuk paced 1-4 Husson with 18 points and Brooks Spaulding added 15. Phil Leighton and Daeshawn McMorrin each added 12.

Shawn Dostie scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds for 1-4 MMA. Tyler Pineo added 17 points and Benjamin Russell netted 12.

Salve Regina 76, UNE 76

At Biddeford, Saturday, Salve Regina opened the game with a 13-0 scoring run en route to the victory.

Jarryd Rossignol paced 0-6 University of New England with 17 points and Brian Jones added 14 points and five steals.

Albertus Magnus 77, St. Joe’s 72

At Standish, Saturday, Arshad Jackson nailed three of four free throws in the final seconds to secure the win for Albertus Magnus after St. Joe’s had rallied from a 10-point deficit to cut the lead to 74-72 with 37 seconds left.

Zach O’Brien paced 4-1 St. Joe’s with 20 points and Chris Petzy added 16.

EMCC wins two

At Concord, N.H., Eastern Maine Community College defeated Nashua CC 76-61 on Saturday, and beat NHTI 80-54 on Sunday during the NHTI/Nashua Festival Tourney.

Thelbert Green paced 11-1 EMCC with 22 points on Saturday, John Caputo added 16, Michael Baltimore put in 12 and Kyle Pluchino had 11. Edson Pierre led EMCC on Sunday with 19 points, Green put in 13 and Pluchino had 12.

ECSU 67, USM 62

At Willamantic, Conn., Jamie Kohn scored the go-ahead basket with 28 seconds remaining and the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors made three of four free throws to close out the game and earn the win.

Chris Pagentine led 5-2 USM with 14 points while Jeremy Jackson contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Brian Alexander and Conor Sullivan each added 13 points.

UMF 74, Green Mountain 72

At Farmington, Pet Sumner drove to the basket and scored with 18 seconds left to give UMaine-Farmington the lead and Dan Kane secured the win when he broke up the Green Mountain inbound play with four seconds left.

Ben Johnson paced 2-3 UMF with 20 points while Andrew Dickey and Kane each added 11. Johnson also had 12 rebounds and Kane notched eight assists.

Colby 71, Fisher 65

At Waterville, Ben Foreman scored 26 points to lead Colby by Fisher in the Colby Invitational on Sunday.

Connor O’Neil added 11 points for 3-2 Colby and Alex Swanson contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Women’s hockey

BC sweeps Maine

At Alfond Arena in Orono, Boston College earned a weekend sweep over the Black Bears with a 1-0 shutout on Sunday and a 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday.

Blake Bolden scored with 1:28 left in the game to give 12-4-1 BC the victory. Corinne Boyles made 18 saves for BC and Brittany Ott made 46 for 9-7-4 Maine.

On Saturday, Melissa Bizzari scored about halfway into overtime to give BC the victory. Jackie Young, Alex Carpenter, and Kate Leary added goals while Boyles made 21 saves.

Kelly McDonald scored two goals for Maine and Brittany Dougherty added one. Ott made 35 saves.
