Bangor Festival of Lights parade, tree lighting set for Saturday

BANGOR, Maine — The annual Festival of Lights parade and city tree lighting will help mark the start of the holiday season when they begin late Saturday afternoon.

The theme for this year’s parade, organized by Bangor Rotary, is “Smiles, Lights and Abundant Good Cheer!”

The parade will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on Railroad Street, turn right onto Main, cross Union through downtown Bangor, cross Hammond and State onto Central Street, turn right onto Harlow, cross State onto Exchange Street, and end by the Bank of America building.

Several street closures and parking and traffic changes are planned Saturday to accommodate the parade, which is expected to last an hour to an hour and a half.

No parking will be allowed on Main Street downtown and on Central, Harlow and Exchange streets after 2:30 p.m. Main Street, from Railroad to Hammond, as well as Central, Harlow, the downtown section of State and Exchange streets will be closed to traffic at 4:15 p.m.

Traffic crossing the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge from Brewer into Bangor will be diverted to Washington Street, as the intersection of Main and Union streets will be shut down.
