BELFAST, Maine — A sharp-eyed neighbor alerted police early Monday morning to the apparent efforts of three men to siphon heating oil from an outdoor oil tank at the vacant home of a woman who had recently died.

According to a report from the Belfast Police Department, Jonathan D. McCue, 23, and Joseph J. Bailey, 25, both of Knox, and Adam Gray, 23, of Swanville, were detained by police at 1:40 a.m. Monday after attempting to hide in the woods behind the vacant Mill Lane home.

The men, who had several five-gallon containers with them, told they had permission to take the oil, according to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham. Police are still investigating that claim, Cunningham said.

However, a search of the car the men were using revealed a variety of drug paraphernalia, including hypodermic needles and syringes, according to the police report.

All three were arrested and charged with refusing to submit to arrest or detention. McCue was also charged with possession of hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia and violating his conditions of release. Bailey was also charged with possession of hypodermic needles and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The men were taken to Waldo County Jail, where they were booked on the charges.
